Candela Peña breaks the taboo: "There are women who can't even go outside."

Candela Peña breaks the taboo: "There are women who can't even go outside."

This Saturday, October 18th, marks World Menopause Day, an initiative launched in 2000 to raise awareness about this natural transition in women's lives and the importance of their health during this period. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in about thirty years there will be more than one billion women aged fifty or older, three times as many as in 1990.

Although awareness of this issue is growing, there is still a long way to go. Proof of this is that it is rarely discussed in public speeches or even in the speeches of well-known figures.

A notable exception is Candela Peña. The actress often uses well-attended interviews to express her thoughts on this topic. This was the case this week with her appearance on David Broncano's "La Revuelta." The artist spoke at length.

This is how she began her presentation: "I've gone through another stage, that of fertility. From this, we've moved on to the fact that I came here for two days and I'm on hormone therapy. I'm a woman already in menopause, one step away from full-blown menopause. You know how many women over 45 talk to me, Candela, talk about this. Look, please, they can't use me as a spokesperson, and you have to bring in people who can educate people about menopause," she noted.

And she continued with her message to the presenter and to society. "What you have to do is bring in an expert, a doctor, a gynecologist to speak. But look, I'm still Candela Peña, an actress, and you can't portray me as the face of menopause. Don't do this to me. I want to act young, I want them to give me roles..." she joked.

Peña also recounted several anecdotes related to menopause: "The other day I was at the supermarket buying groceries, and a woman came up behind me and said, 'These are really good for you, blueberries. They must be a great antioxidant…'"

Candela Peña continued with another incident that happened to her: "I went to the dermatologist and I was there asking her questions. And, to start with, the lady told me, 'You're not one of those left-wing artists, you're leaving here.' She broke the code of ethics. And I acted like a fool, I didn't want to get into trouble, I avoided conflict. I'm sitting in front of the lady, blonde, pretty, good body, and suddenly she starts sweating profusely, but not normally. It was a real spurt, it was Niagara Falls, she was niagaring. She gets up, stands up, starts unbuttoning her robe, opens it like this... I was sitting there, with my leftist bent, sitting there. And she told me: 'My panties are stuck to my body, my bra is stuck to my body, my whole body was niagaring. She was liquefying alive.'"

And she concluded her argument: "With this, what I want to say, because I was at the age of menopause, to all these women who catch me in the middle of the supermarket and ask me to talk about dryness, is that there are as many menopauses as there are women in the world. There are women who can't even go outside. You can have millions of symptoms. A dryness that makes you unable to even put on underwear. You have to bring in a specialist to talk about all this."
